Five years ago, 30-year old activits Bree Newsome Bass shocked the world by climbing a 30-foot flagpole and taking down a Confederate battle flag at the South Carolina Capital State Building — a flag that state leaders had first raised in 1961 to tell the budding civil rights movement to “stay out.”
